Marcia Sherman

Obituary of Marcia Sherman

November 21st, 2020 at the age of 91. She is predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Jack Sherman, and sister Betty Jane Cohen, and survived by her children Jo (Mary Jane Varley), Amy, and Skip (Laura Mills) Sherman; grandchildren, Drew (Sabina Bera) and Brett Tschetter, Tyler, Brad and Leanne Sherman, and Julia Lewis; sister Sylvia Shushan and niece Sally Shushan of New Orleans, along with many other nephews, nieces, cousins and close friends.

Marcia was a graduate of Monroe High School, attended Lake Erie College, and was an established music specialist. She had a 38-year career at the Jewish Home of Rochester (retiring at age 83!) and was very proud of her work leading the Resident Council for decades, advocating for resident’s rights.

Her 65-year marriage to Jack was a love story to be cherished. Their lives were filled with pursuing their passions for opera, classical music, love of history, travel, investing, and spending time with their family.

Each grandchild's arrival was greeted with great joy and celebration. Marcia was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and loved Mah Jongg, genealogy, tackling NY Times crossword puzzles, and occasionally betting on the horses. And none of us will ever be able to watch another episode of "Jeopardy" or "Shark Tank" without thinking about her.

She was a long-standing member of Temple B’rith Kodesh and was very active at Valley Manor leading the Men’s Chorus and various resident committees.

She will be remembered for her intellect, musical prowess, and for being a friend to so many that crossed her path in life. She carried herself with style and grace (her trademark Iris Apfel inspired glasses had at least one person everyday stop her to admire them), was a gracious and gifted hostess, and was sharp until her final days. She was a wonderful diagnostician who "practiced" family medicine in two states without a license. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

The family is very grateful to Aileen Vega for the dedicated care she gave Marcia over the last 3 years and to the great staff at Valley Manor.
