Barry Wishengrad

Barry Wishengrad, 81, of Pittsford, NY, formerly of Fayetteville, NY, passed away peacefully at his home on September 7, 2020 with his family by his side. Barry was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Born in Albany, NY, he was the son of the late Samuel and Dorothy Wishengrad. After graduating from Albany High School in 1957, Barry attended Albany College of Pharmacy (Union College), graduating in 1961. While at ACP, Barry was a proud member of Rho Pi Phi International Pharmaceutical Fraternity. He moved to Syracuse in 1963, having been offered a position at Siegel’s Pharmacy on the SU campus.  After working there for several years, he purchased Church-Rexall Drug in the Franklin Park area of Syracuse and, when expanding the drug store, he opened up a wine and spirits store in the excess space. Several years later, he purchased Siegel’s Pharmacy. Barry later sold his independent pharmacy to Fay’s Drugs, staying on as a consultant for two years. It was during this time that Barry came up with the concept of a warehouse-style wine and spirits store, selling only the top brands at deeply discounted prices. The concept became Liquor City, which was a highly successful retail operation for the seventeen years under family ownership and management . 

After selling the business, Barry pursued his other passions, with unbridled enthusiasm .

Barry was an original member of the Dave Bing Society, the SU Hardwood Club Board, and served as President of the Crouse-Marshall Businessmen’s Association, He also served on the Board of the University Hill Corporation, and numerous other organizations. Barry strongly believed in giving back to the community, and was the original sponsor of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary Wine Tasting. He spent his later years avidly following the Yankees, NY Giants, Knicks, and, most importantly to him, Syracuse University basketball and football. He was also a dedicated and astute investor, following world financial markets with a keen analytical eye. 

Barry is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, D. Sharon Pollack Wishengrad; son & daughter (in law), Jeff & Laurie Wishengrad; his grandson, Daniel Wishengrad, who he affectionately called his number one; brother, Joel Wishengrad; sister, Estelle Wishengrad; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Private services will be in Albany.
