Obituary of Lester Eber
Lester Eber passed away peacefully April 5, 2020 at the age of 82 from complications of Covid-19. A lifetime resident of Rochester New York and graduate of The Harley School, Lester was born January 26, 1938. Lester was predeceased by his parents, Evelyn and Allen Eber, and sisters Mildred Boslov and Sally Kleeberg. Survived by his beloved wife, Ellen, of 58 years, loving children, David and Wendy (Eric), grandchildren, Georgina, Henry, Brice and step grandchildren, Alexis and Ethan. Lester was a devoted husband, loving father and caring grandfather and will be missed deeply by his family and friends.
In 1959, after graduating from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Lester began his career in the wine & spirits distribution business working for his father at Eber Brothers in Rochester NY. Throughout his lifetime, he was deeply committed to the success of the family business, employees and the suppliers. For 60 years, he worked passionately and tirelessly for the family business distributing wine & spirits in New York and Connecticut. Lester approached every opportunity and challenge with passion and vigor, holding himself and the companies that he led to the highest standards. He was talented, blunt and tenacious, with an intense and never-ending desire to do well for the company.
For more than a decade he also worked for Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits as a lobbyist in Albany and served as a Governmental Affairs and Compliance Administrator.
Lester was active in the Rochester community. For several decades he served on the board of Rochester Management, a local not for profit real estate management firm, which provides affordable housing for seniors and families. He also served on the board of the Jewish Home for many years and the board of The Allendale Columbia School.
Lester was an avid sports fan. Not only was he a golfer, but also enjoyed playing tennis routinely with his family and friends throughout his active life. Spending many summers in Canada, he loved swimming in the St. Lawrence River. A dyed in the wool Buffalo Bill's fan, he attended many home and away games during his lifetime. Lester was also a basketball fan. His father sponsored a local basketball team, Eber-Seagram, that eventually became the Rochester Royals and latter the Sacramento Kings. Lester was very proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them participate in sports.
Interment at the discretion of the family, private graveside funeral. No calling hours will be observed due to the Covid -19 virus. A memorial service may be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Lester's memory may be made to the Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester , 601 Elmwood Ave. Rochester, New York 14642 or a charity of one's choice.
