Mr Stabins was my Science teacher at Paul Revere School number 26 in the 1960's.
He was a very kind and compassionate person. For this reason I say: Earth has lost a wonderful role model but Heaven has gain another soul.
May Gods grace comfort and keep the family.
With Sincere Sympathy,
Alma Caples-Bliss

Ed was very well known at the JCC where I've been privileged to have known him for many years. We were contemporaries and shared many different interests but his breadth of activities was unmatched. His energy to run marathons and 10K's at his age was unusual. But the thing that truly amazed me, that he never mentioned, was his being a violinist in the Brighton Symphony Orchestra.
He was a wonderful human being and we'll all miss his smile, humility and sense of humor.

I was a former student of Mr. Stabins at Frederick Douglass Jr. High School during the years of 1970-1972. My older sister, Debra, also had him the year before. Although I did not maintain regular contact with him over the years, I did have the great fortune of running into him every now and then. Most recently, about a year ago at East High School. He explained to me that he was subbing and I told him I needed to run home and I would be right back. As luck would have it, I had recently come across a copy of Debbie's yearbook from Frederick Douglass and I brought the yearbook back so he could see it. I also made a copy of his picture for him. He did get a big kick out of that!
What I remembered over the years was Mr. Stabins was a very nice, kind, gentle person who's nature was one of comfort and caring. I don't know if he ever realized that during that timeframe at Douglass, my life was interrupted by my father suffering a second stroke (at the age of 41). Looking back, I'm sure things changed between the 7th and 8th grades for me and it probably reflected in my school work. However, I am comforted by knowing people like Mr. Stabins unknowingly provided the love and support by just being who they were.
In closing, I must say that I am both happy and sad to see the "whole" person he was, evidenced by the documentation in the obituary. I hate to admit that even at my age now (49), I still think of my teachers as one dimensional characters...just "teachers". I am utterly amazed that he was truly this amazing person, with a lot of the similarities as I have...athlete, musician, veteran, etc. I wish I had known...what a wonderful role model!!! I now know there is one more thing I MUST do in my volunteer work in my neighborhood and schools...it is to help "humanize" the image of teachers, so perhaps, some youth may benefit from this positive potential. Thank you for allowing me that opportunity to share the gratitude I feel in my heart for having the blessing of knowing and learning from this wonderful person. Extending my sincere, heartfelt sympathy and love to his many family members and friends.

Ed was such a kind person. He loved his grand children and would take them camping when they were young. He loved to watch them play hockey and attended as many of their games as he could. You could see how proud he was of them. We will miss him very much.
