Obituary of Marc J. Feldman
Feldman, Marc J.
Brighton: December 4,2007,at age 62, after a brief battle with lung cancer.
Marc was an Internationally Renowned Scientist who made landmark
contributions to the field of Superconductivity Research and
applications. He spend the past 18 years as a member of The
University of Rochester's Department of Electrical
and Computer Engineering, where he held the positions of
Professor and Senior Scientist. In his career, he made many
lasting contributions, both through his own Scientific Research
as well as in the education and development of many young
Scientists and Engineers. His early work on Superconducting
Electronic Devices led to applications as diverse as the
internationally accepted standard of the "Volt" and the sensitive
radio telescope receivers employed by Astronomers to pick up the
faint radio waves from stars, nebulae and galaxies in the
Universe. As the leader of the Superconducting Electronics
Laboratory at the University of Rochester, Dr. Feldman led a
number of major projects to develop new kinds of computers
based on the unique properties of "Superconductors", metals
that carry electric current with little or noresistance.
He originated the concept for Superconducting "Quantum Computing"
with his University of Rochester Collaborators, which is
now being developed in more than 20 major research centers
worldwide.
Most recently, Dr. Feldman was leading an effort to develop
"Ballistic Transistors"-- devices that showed real promise to
become the building blocks for a future generation of ultra-fast,
low-energy computers. Dr. Feldman was deeply respected by his
many colleagues, collaborators and students for his deep scientific
knowledge, his endless creativity and his superb ability to
communicate about his work. He is also fondly remembered by all
for being a selfless collaborator and for his boundless energy
and infectious enthusiasm for doing science.
Dr. Feldman was most devoted to his family. He relished his role
as soccer coach and father to his sons, Lucas and Benjamin.
A native of Philadelphia. Mr. Feldman received his B.A. and
his M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and Ph.D.from the
University of California of Berkeley in addition to his
post-Doctoral work at Berkeley. Dr. Feldman conducted Research
at different times at Chalmers University, in Gothenburg, Sweden,
the NASA/Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City,
and the University of Virginia among others. In 1989, he
accepted a position at the University of Rochester, where he
worked until his death.
In addition to his two sons, Dr. Feldman is survived by his loving wife,
Susan Feldman; sister, Barbara Feldman of Cambridge, MA.; and brother,
A. Richard Feldman of Philadelphia, PA.
