I knew Marc mainly from the Brighton Banshee soccer games and later Brighton High games that his son Ben played. He always had a smile and was good for a laugh on the sidelines. A very nice down to earth man who was always supportive of his wife and family. I remember him fondly and he left us much too soon!! Sincerely, Greg

I have known Marc since I was a graduate student when we met at conferences, and later when he and I were both at UR. As I recall my times with Marc, I recall all the different ways and thoughts I have had all my life. Marc was a brilliant and fascinating person to know. It is hard to accept that he is gone.

I knew Marc professionally for more than twenty years. We met frequently at scientific meetings and Marc was always willing to explain to me his research and the significant of the research of others. He was always enthusiastic about his own work, in particular, and life, in general. The one word that I think best described Marc is the Yiddish word “mensch”; Marc was a “mensch” in the best meaning of the word.

Dear Feldmans,
I was Marc's Ph. D. thesis advisor at U.C. Berkeley in the early 70's. His thesis was on Josephson Junction parametric amplifiers for microwaves. Marc was a brilliant and kind human being, and one of my very best students. After graduation, he continued to contribute very importantly to the field of applied superconductivity. I extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to you all.

Marc was in part my tutor in understanding the theory for SIS-mixers during my PhD work at Chalmers in the early 80's. His engagement and passion always created the right atmosphere for good scientific discussions, something he early carried on into new fields, such as quantum computation. It was always very easy to like Marc and I think not only me but everyone felt they had a special relation to him, which makes it even more hard to realize that he is not around any more. Marc also had a special relation to Sweden with the wooden clogs that he loved and good Swedish coffee, and I think these things made us also feel proud of our nationality. I was surprised to see the Swedish clogs even many years after his last visit here and when very few people here would wear them. My thoughts go to Susan, Lucas and Benjamin and I express my deepest condolences to them and to Marc’s other relatives and colleagues.

We could always count on Marc for unique insights in science - quantum physics and superconductivity in particular - for energy, kindness, collegiality, and just general brotherhood with all his fellow researchers across the whole world. We all respected him and we all just liked him. I'll think fondly more often now of the interactions with Marc since my graduate student days in the 1980's through the many chats at many conferences. My most sincere condolences go to his family. We are all better for having known you, Marc.

I've known Marc for more than two decades. While our research interests didn't have a large overlap, he was always a good person to talk to and was a source of valued insight when it came to superconducting electronics. I could always rely on him when I needed a referee for a journal article. Marc always struck me as a warm person who would go out of his way to make another person feel comfortable. He will be missed by the entire superconducting community.

Marc and I have been acquainted for three decades by our work in the field of superconductivity. I am sad to lose someone I looked forward to working with on a joint project we discussed. I talked to him last week, and promised that we'd be telling Marc Feldman stories for a long time, and many of them would be complementary. It was hard to say goodbye.

I was very sad to learn of Marc's recent illness and his passing. He was in fine form when I saw him only a few months ago. I have known Marc as a colleague for about 30 years. Marc has always been well-educated and informed, very ready and able in expressing his opinions -- and almost always right. I never talked to Marc to have my views reinforced. Rather, I learned to expect to be forced to change them for the better. I never failed to enjoy, or be rewarded by, a visit with Marc. The world is already a poorer place without Marc Feldman!

I offer my deepest condolences to his family. Dr. Feldman was my advisor during my postdoc stay at the University of Rochester in 1997-1999. It was a very productive time for me in many things due to Marc’s broad knowledge of superconductivity. Since leaving Rochester I enjoyed meeting Marc on many occasions on conferences because of his always joyful and optimistic personality. I will miss him very much.

Marc, along with Bob Mattauch, advised my PhD research at UVA, and I have many, many strong memories of Marc from over the years. The following one captures a lot of what I loved about Marc and why he was such an important mentor in my life. I was still a grad student and we were at a luncheon meeting at ‘Bodos’ in Charlottesville along with Bob, Tony Kerr and S-K Pan (all well known scientists in the THz and or superconducting fields). We were in the heat of discussing our technical work and plans when Marc exclaimed out of the blue that there was something interesting going on in his coffee cup! What had caught his, and soon our!, attention was micro swirls/vortexes in the coffee after he stirred it in a certain way (and added some milk). What struck me was his unabashed willingness to cut through the ongoing scientific discussion to get our attention, that he was OPEN to being captured by a phenomena (that most would view as unimportant) going on in his coffee, and that it excited him as much as the research in the lab and prompted Marc to consider possible explanations (for days!). I think of that moment quite often, both when I am in the lab and trying to be open to the possible telling ‘signs’ from experiments of what is going on, but also in the day to day… in enjoying the little unexpected things that are so easy to pass by and not even notice. I will miss Marc very much.

Marc visited us at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, about two years 79/80. He made great contributions to our work, particularly regarding SIS (or quasi-particle) mixers for radioastronomy. We also appreciated his personality and friendship, always a joyful person full of facts and opinions. I and my colleagues and friends will miss him, and I offer my deepest condolences to his family and friends.
