I'm very sorry to hear of Horace's passing. He was very helpful to me
when I was putting together a play about Chester Carlson & Xerox. I very much regret that Horace wasn't mentioned in the play. I believe it bothered him at the time. He was, of course, very responsible for the success of the 914. He liked to say he made Joe Wilson look like a nice guy. He said "I had to be a sonofabitch to make Joe Wilson look like a nice guy." In my latest version of the play, please be assured that Horace will be prominently mentioned -- as he well deserved to be.George Shea

When I started at Xerox right out of school, I worked in 207 and Horace was the also housed in 207. I will never forget his crusade against mini skirts and his his voice which could be heard throughout 208 when he saw one. He was one of the reasons that Xerox used to be a great company. RIP Horace

Horace was a wonderful, outsized human being whose acquaintance I had the privilege of making both at Xerox and socially in Rochester. He and Gloria were a loving couple and Horace could be as funny as the dickens in so many ways. His many professional contributions to the launching of Xerox are well known and even legendary. He was certainly a local giant whose many kindnesses to this community will be missed.

For as many years as I can remember in the 40 years I have known with Xerox, Horace was so much a part of it. We talked from time to time about business, its challenges, his thoughts and ideas, and sometimes just life in general. It was always a conversation filled with depth and pride of the company he served for so many years. I will miss his insights, his wit and presence. Heartfelt sympathies to Gloria and the family.

My personal thoughts on Horace Becker:
Horace stood large as a mentor, a role model, friend, colleague, and boss. He was straight forward and one of the most honest and caring person I have ever known. As a fellow New Yorker, I understood his style. I recall the pitch “Xerox is People” and he was the real thing. My direct relationship with Horace at Xerox started with the FTC data gathering on consumables, and continued through the mutagenic toner (nitropyrenes) investigation. He was a lifelong friend. We will miss him but we will always remember him. My sympathy and condolences go to his family and those who loved him.

After purchasing sailing lessons from Horace, (when he was 86), at a Temple Sinai auction, we enjoyed precious afternoons learning about life, loves of life, (his wife Gloria, although we never met her), the beginnings of Xerox, and peace on the waters of Canandaigua Lake. He was a wonderful teacher. It was a pleasure to have met him.

I met Mr. Becker only a couple of times - the last time at my father's funeral. But I remember my father telling me about working with Mr. Becker at Xerox. My father, Joe Stone, lost most of his sight quite suddenly, and he was employed at Xerox at the time. This was in 1958 and people who developed disabilities were not normally kept on. Mr. Becker advocated for my father, which allow him to continue working for another 15 years at Xerox. I think about what a different life my family would have had without Mr. Becker's help, and I am truly grateful to him.

I have many fond memories of Horace; starting with the visit to Fuji Xerox in 1972 with Jim Brooks and John Herman for the launch of the FX 4000 to include the many mentoring sessions over my 30 years with Xerox. I viewed Horace with high regard and respect as the "conscience" of Xerox and an Engineers' Engineer.

Horace Becker! - one of the finest people I had the good fortune to meet during my long career at Xerox. As a 'newbie' in the Manufacturing Division in the late '60s, I volunteered to conduct tours of the plant. On my first tour, and many after that, I met my tour group in the lobby of Building 207. I had not previously met Horace, and I have no idea how he even knew who I was, but he came down the stairway from his office, greeted the group and introduced me as their tour guide. He praised my dedication and the great job I was doing, and I couldn't have been happier if he had handed me a check for a million bucks. I got to know Horace as a stern but fair manager who was genuinely interested in his people. Rest in Peace, Horace.

I first met Mr Becker when I ended in trouble for starting a petition for the hourly employees to have the same hours as the union employees. Never having worked at a company with a union I was unaware that you just didn't do that kind of thing. I was scheduled for dismissal when Mr Becker jumped in with both feet and said that it wasn't fair since I had no idea that it wasn't legal to petition. So thanks to Mr Becker I was forgiven with the promise that I would never do anything like that again. That happened in the early 1960's.

The first time I met Horace at a Xerox gathering, I was fearful, his boisterous reputation preceding him. Not to worry, he was boisterous but also friendly & hospitable. Over the years, his courage & leadership helped make Xerox the company of integrity it was. Rest in peace, Horace! Condolences to Gloria & his family.

I had the pleasure of meeting Horace in the early 80's on an official business visit to Webster. Our field service management team took an afternoon out of meetings to visit the manufacturing facilities at Webster. We were fortunate enough to be given the grand tour by Horace. I remember him as a very sociable gentleman eager to share the inner workings of the entire manufacturing complex with us. visiting Webster as a field service manager, was very meaningful to me as I was able to carry practical information back to my team in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Thank you, Horace for your major contributions to our wonderful history. Don Stover, Rapid City, SD

I grew up on Highview Trail just down the street from Horace and Gloria Becker. I have fond memories from my childhood that include both Horace and Gloria. I was the same ageI used to visit and swim in their pool when the grandchildren visited. I was always told to come swim anytime. Horace always took the time to talk to me when out in the neighborhood and he was so genuinely interested about my plans for the future as a young adult heading off to college. After my father passed away in 1998, I no longer had a reason to visit the old neighborhood except to drive by a few times when I was in town. One time when I was driving by Horace was outside and he waved me down to talk. It was so nice to see him, The last time I saw Horace I was in Rochester to argue at the Appellate Division and I ran into him on the street. We chatted and caught up about our families and he wanted to know all about my career for about 20 minutes. Horace was a kind smart man who will be missed by many!

I met Horace many years ago when I worked as a nursery school teacher at the JCC. He was an amazing person. He was always friendly, warm and would tell me stories of places he and his wife had been. Both passed and recent trips. He was so full of energy. I believe he met people the same way I had him. He just came up to people and talked to them! He adored his children and told me about his daughter who worked at the Pentagon (he told me this on 9/11) and his son who works in Buffalo as a physician. I wish his family peace and comfort by the kind of life he lived and the man he was. I am so sorry for your lose. The world has lost a wonderful friend!
