Obituary of Ellis Gruber

Dr. Ellis Gruber Passed away peacefully on August 18, 2014 at age 90 with his beloved wife of 62 years, Rachelle, by his side. He is survived by Rachelle; sons, Barry, Alan & Kenny & daughter Stephanie (Jon) Ripps; 11 grandchildren and one great grandson. Predeceased by sisters, Rita & Anne. Born in Southport, England, Ellis received his medical degree at University of Liverpool & immigrated to America to do an Ophthalmology residency at New York Hospital. He served as a Captain in the US Air Force & then moved to Rochester where he spent the next 40 years in private practice. He was an Associate Professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, founder of the Low Vision Clinic at ABVI, & was a widely published and respected expert in contact lens science. Ellis was an active & generous member of the Jewish community & lifelong member of Congregation Beth Sholom, where he served as President. An avid jazz fan & pianist, he loved to play tennis, ski & travel the world. He enjoyed winters at his Florida home with Rachelle & family visitors. Ellis was tremendously loved by patients, friends and most especially his family. He was the most loving husband, father & grandfather anyone could ask for & was a true British Gentleman. Special thanks to all his wonderful caregivers at the Jewish Home 6NE. He will be forever loved & missed.
