Obituary of Lewis Lansky

Dr. Lewis Lansky, 77 years old of Silver Spring, Maryland and Rochester, New York, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2016, in Silver Spring due to complications from Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Lansky was born April 8, 1938 in Buffalo, New York to Jacob Lansky and Lillian Lansky (Miller). Dr. Lansky did his undergraduate studies at the University of Rochester and then received a master’s degree from the University of Buffalo. He received a Ph.D. in American History from Case Western Reserve University in 1976. Dr. Lansky’s research focused on the Great Depression and the New Deal. He was a professor of history at Monroe Community College from 1962 to 2004. There he served as an advisor to a number of student organizations, including the Chess Club, coaching the college’s chess team to a Pan-American Intercollegiate Chess Championship. He was also an active participant in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1965 from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. He is survived by his son, Joshua Michael Lansky, his daughter-in-law, Mara K Lansky, his grandchildren, Jacob Nathan Lansky and Jonah Noah Lansky, and his friend Brenda Ann Durham. Graveside Services will be on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Riverside Cemetery. Friends are asked to meet at the main entrance. Click here for directions to the cemetery.
