Obituary of Beatrice Roxin

Beatrice June (Caro) Roxin, age 89, of Brighton, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2017. Born in Utica, NY on June 23, 1927, daughter of the late Samuel Caro and Freda (Frank) Caro, she attended Utica Free Academy where she excelled both academically and as a cellist, winning the prestigious Curran Scholarship to attend the Eastman School of Music, from which she graduated in 1949 as a member of Sigma Alpha Iota Honorary Sorority. It was at Eastman where Beatrice met her future husband, Paul. They were married in 1951 and started a family shortly thereafter, where Beatrice stayed home with her children and became very involved in all of their activities as well as being a volunteer for the RPO, League of Women Voters, the Indian Landing School PTA, the UR Orchestra, Temple Beth El, Morning Musicales, and Hadassah. An avid reader throughout her life, she shared her passion for books with each of her children and grandchildren. Later she served as a popular instrumental music teacher, first with the Brighton schools and later with the Webster schools where many of her students would come back to visit and go on to have meaningful careers. Beatrice was feted by her numerous friends and colleagues upon retirement in 1986 and maintained these friendships lifelong. Known as Bea to her friends and family, she was also renowned for her cooking and shared her talents by creating wonderful dishes, especially over the holidays for friends and family. A very independent woman, Bea loved her home in Brighton where she enjoyed many friendships and served on the board of the Brighton Library. Bea loved the Adirondacks and worldwide travels with Paul. Following Paul’s passing, she made a new home at St. John’s Meadows, where she was pleased to enjoy many new friendships as well as reconnect with old friends. She is survived by daughters, Wendy (Gary) Wicks and Debbie (Don) Waltzer and a son, Rick (Amy); much loved grandchildren David, Brittany, Lisa, Madison, Haley, Sarah, Abbey, Ted (Jen), Mike, Jeff (Ludia), and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sadly, her cherished sisters, Anne Caro Guttman and Janet Caro Murphy passed away within two days of each other this past May. The family is particularly grateful to the staff of VNS Hospice, Strong’s Palliative Care Unit 412, Dr. Ifthikharuddin and Sheree, Hazzan Leubitz and Rabbi Bitran, Shepherd Home, and HHA, Michelle Owens. The family will receive friends for an hour prior to the funeral service which will be held on FRIDAY, January 6, 2017 at 12 NOON in The Main Sanctuary of Temple Beth El (139 Winton Road South). Interment, Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will then receive friends following the cemetery from 2:30 - 4:00 PM in Briarwood at St. John Meadows. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions may be made to Temple Beth El, the Eastman School of Music, the RPO, and Shepherd Home.
