Obituary of Leonard S. Freedman

Leonard S. Freedman Passed away at home on January 12, 2014, surrounded by his loving and devoted family at the age of 78. Predeceased by late wife Ann Sara Weiss; he is survived by his wife, Marian S. Moskow; children, Alan (Charlotte Rowe), Peter (Moksha Colotelo), Michael (Linda Bean) Freedman, Ari, Dara, Mollie and Mikki Freedman-Weiss; step-children, Hershel (Julie Rose) and Nathaniel Nachlis; grandchildren, Alexa, Alyssa, Jacob and Leah Freedman and additional extended family and innumerable friends. Len was a lifelong Jewish communal professional, serving Jewish community centers in Toledo, Hartford and Philadelphia and for 17 years was the Executive Director of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Rochester. He was also a past president of the association of Jewish Center Professionals. Born and raised in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Len received degrees from State College at Salem, Massachusetts and Boston University School of Social Work. Len actively volunteered in the wider community, having served as chairman of the board of the Center for Dispute Settlement, an active mediator for the 7th Judicial District, chairman of the Pittsford Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, chair of the Martin Luther King Jr. Greater Rochester Commission, Vice President of AIDS Rochester, President of the Mental Health Association of Greater Rochester, member of the Advisory Committee of the Institute of Ethical Leadership of the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School and advising the Italian American Community Center. In 1983 Len was named Executive of the Year by United Way of Rochester. In 2011 he received the lifetime achievement award from the Center for Dispute Settlement. Len was honored as the 2012 Pittsford Citizen of the Year. In June, 2013 Len was honored by the New York State Legislature with a proclamation recognizing his years of public service. Beyond all of this, Len remarked that, “out of everything I’ve done, being a dad is my greatest accomplishment.” Funeral Services will take place on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at 11 AM in the Sanctuary of Temple Beth El (139 S. Shiva (the seven-day period of mourning & visitation) will be held at the family home at 17 Bay Colony Drive, Pittsford. Visitors are welcome Tuesday from 7-9 PM, Wednesday & Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM, Friday from 2-4 PM, Saturday from 7-9 PM & Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM.
