Dear Ricky, Bernard and Ilene
The first time I met Bernie was in 1947 when he brought a number of jewish students at Samson College to Rochester for Pesach , Later, he was a frequent guest on Shabbat , at our home on Huntington Park. In later years I enjoyed greeting Janice at Temple on Shabbat in her regular seat near where I sat.
I recall these memories because it illustrates how Jay became so committed to Beth El and to our Jewish Community He was a role model for those who share his values. In his own , quiet way he carried on the tradition of serving the Jewish community.
On a lighter note, I once asked Jay if I could use his Syracuse tickets to see a Cornell basketball game. With out a blink of the eye , he handed me the tickets. When I thanked him a few days later, he did not make fun of the fact that Syracuse beat Cornell by 50 points.
Brad joins me in extending our condolences.

Dear Bernard and Ricki,
I am so terribly sorry to learn of this tragic loss. Jay was the first person who taught me real estate at a class he taught many years ago. He was so smart and equally creative. I really looked up to him and admired him for many things, most particularly his commitment to our synagogue. He will be missed by all those fortunate to have known him. I will always remember him.
With deepest sympathy,
Dan Goldstein, on behalf of the Goldstein family

Ricki and Bernard,
I remember going up to Rochester with Bernard for a long weekend and having the privilege to spend time around the Birnbaum family. My first impression was disbelief that a grown man would have such an affinity for Mickey Mouse, but alas Jay was that man. He had no shame, and pridefully displayed his every growing collection. From ties, to watches, to figurines, and collectibles there seemed no Mickey could escape his reach. Jay Birnbaum, sitting behind his desk in Rochester, radiant smile and teasing Bernard and I to get out so he could wrap up for the day. It is an image that will always comfort and bring peace to me.
From the few times I met Jay he leaves a lasting impression. One that is full of love, kindness, and positivity. I am so sad for the loss of an amazing husband, great father, and noble figure throughout the Rochester community. I only wish I could be there with y'all in this time of grief.
With love,
Marco.
