I was a colleague of Herbs for many years at the JCC. It was always quite a trip being around him...amazing, quick wit...and extremely creative. M ay he rest in peace, and may his memories continue to bring smiles to many.

Herb was a dear friend of my parents, Ann Weiss and Len Freedman, for the many years they worked together at the JCC and beyond.
Under Herb's passionate and tireless leadership of the arts for so many years there were always actors acting in the theater that Herb ensured was state-of-the-art. I remember that the walls of the back hallway at the JCC were so filled with playbills that there was no room for more. His plays were “must see” productions and we would often “must see” Herb in them as he usually took on a small (sometimes not so small) part.
Painters’ paintings and sculptors’ sculptures were always featured in the rooms and lobbies of the building.
He brought Jews and non-Jews into the JCC. He brought life into the JCC.
On behalf of the Freedman-Weiss family, our condolences to June, and to all of Herb's family and friends.
Michael Freedman

Herb is an indelible part of my life. What a generous, gracious, kind, talented mensch he was. And a gentle giant of a teddy bear in whose warm embrace of a hug I always melted. Fare thee well, dear soul.

Herb. I loved Herb. We met, ofCOURSE, in theater. I was a musical theater dancer with no desire to “be a lead” but as destiny would have it, I ended up in that position, with Blackfriars, in CHICAGO, playing Roxie Hart to Herbs’ Amos/Mr Cellophane. It was our first time on stage together and a glorious experience.
We tried being Unitarians for awhile. The best part of it was going to diners for brunch after services. During that time I was a reporter for the weekly radio program started by one of the ministers, “Life Now”. Reporters would come up with show ideas and then beg our friends and acquaintances to let us interview them as we developed topic ideas and fashioned them into half hour programs.
Herb and I decided it was a great idea for me to do a show about depression. I used his musical as the spring board and spent many hours interviewing Herb about aspects of his life that I’d otherwise most likely never have known about. Oh how we laughed!!!!!
Herb was a talented loving funny brave human being. Bye for now Herb. Rest in beautiful peace. Claudia

A larger than life presence, an amazing actor, mentor and friend. I would not be where I am today without Herb and the Rochester theatre scene would not be either.

A sad passing and a great loss to the community. Herb played an important role in my development as an actor. He was funny, exasperating, demanding, loving and caring wrapped up in a a big teddy bear body. Thanks for the memories, Herb. Don Dowling

Herb made an impression on me during my first show in Rochester theatre, when Marilyn Goldberg and I ran props for A Little Night Music. As we were lying on our stomachs in the wings, honking the antiquated horns of the arriving cars, a deep voice startled me: "I've heard you're doing good things." I gazed up at a towering figure of a man smiling down at me. From then on, I always looked up to Herb, whether I was a volunteer with the Center Stage Committee, an acting class teacher, or a performer. People admired him because he knew theatre, he imparted his knowledge generously with kindness and a great deal of humor, and he shared himself with others on and off stage, including his vulnerabilities. My heart goes out to June, his family, and his extended family of Center Stage and the Rochester theatre community..

Some of my best memories and experiences on stage were at the JCC. Like so many young actors at the time, I had just finished one show and was rehearsing another at the JCC. I had arrived early one evening and was strolling around the area outside the theatre and stopped to read a bulletin board. It was then that I heard a voice call out softly, "Little girl, little girl, come here. I want to talk to you about something". I knew who Herb was but had never said more than 10 words to him at a time. I walked over and he began to excitedly tell me about a musical that they were auditioning for, "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh". Would I be interested in auditioning? I immediately told him "I don't sing". I had never been in a musical in my life! He encouraged me to meet with the director Brian and "see how things go". So I did. And the rest is history! Herb was also in the cast and every performance was a JOY! I will always be grateful to Herb for spotting me wandering the halls of the JCC and involving me in that production. Rest In Peace, Herb...........

Herb loved life, the theatre, his family, his friends. He was so generous to me when I moved back to Rochester. How he made me laugh. When we were working on his one person show, we'd go to lunch and during that hour or two,10 people (at least) would walk up to our table to say hello. He will be remembered by the many whose lives he touched with his love and enthusiasm and humor. I am only one who is grateful for his extraordinary life.
