I first met Leo when I started working for Kozel Steel back in 1986 or so. My education was not related to the steel industry, so I was a novice when it came to all things steel. There was a lot to learn, not only about steel but about the general operations of the business. My job duties included answering the phone, writing orders, dispatching the trucks and taking care of customer service issues - a pretty full plate when you're knowledgeable about what your selling, a bit overwhelming when your not. So it was early summer and I was about 3 days in - Leo was assisting me at the counter. We were pretty busy. Sometime mid morning, Leo looks at me and says, "OK - see you tomorrow" and proceeds to start to leave for the golf course. I was like Leo - where are you going? To which he replies, I'm going golfing - you'll be fine, and proceeds to walk out the door. Well my initiation by fire continued for the foreseeable future but it turned out fine, like Leo thought it would - I still work at Kozel today. Leo even ended up taking me out for golf a few times, playing at Midvale with Eli Baughman and some other friends of his. We had some fun, for sure. Leo eventually retired and would come back to the plant every now and then to say hello, interested in what was going on, that cigarette eternally dangling from his mouth. Leo was well loved and will be missed by all who knew him. I'm pretty sure he's on a golf course now with his friends in that place where the sky is always sunny and blue.
