I was new at Strong Memorial Hospital when Florence began her outstanding work on behalf of burn patients at the hospital. I believe she had not previously been aware of the need for and contribution of social work in the care of burn patients. However, she was open to my urging, and we became partners in the care of many a pediatric patient. She came to welcome a social work input, whether it was to provide support to patients and families, assist in discharge planning, or making and coordinating referrals to Child Protective Services. She was a gracious collaborator, a fierce advocate for patients and families, and a passionate teacher. I valued her and our work together tremendously.

I apologize for this belated expression of condolences to the family. I was out of the country when Florence died and greatly saddened to hear the news on my return. We knew each other for 35 years. Florence was one of the first staff nurses to come to my office in the School of Nursing when I became a faculty member in the early 1970's. As she developed her expertise in burn nursing, she knew she needed to develop the evidence base for treatment, which meant becoming a research partner with her physician colleagues. She knew she needed to understand statistics, about which she knew very little. She asked if I would tutor her, and we spent many hours in my office increasing her knowledge and understanding of stats. It was a privilege for me to help her; I knew I was in the company of an amazing and totally committed nurse, who was in the process of revolutionizing burn treatment for patients. I had been working as an aide in SMH when we received quite a few of the survivors of the terrible plane crash at the Rochester airport on my unit, and so had a bit of background about what had inspired Florence to her professional mission in life. I will always regret that my nomination of her for honorary status in the American Academy of Nursing was not accepted. She deserved this recognition. Her contributions to the profession were unique and extraordinary. I am glad Florence was able to celebrate the family's gift to the SON of the Jacoby Board Room during her lifetime. It will help remind others of her spirit, dedication, and accomplishments for many, many years to come.
I celebrate her life and her accomplishments and also her unfailing commitment to her husband and family. May memory of her give you much joy, as you grieve her loss. Madeline Schmitt

I wish to convey my sincere sympathy to the family of Florence Jacoby.
I came to work at SMH in the Fall of 1965 in the ICU. Florence taught me so much about the care of the burned patient. She was also very supportive for a novice ICU nurse. In 1975, I went on to complete my M.S. in Nursing and began teaching nursing at Roberts Wesleyan College. She helped me with my burn nursing lectures and gave me a copy of some of her slides. Her book certainly was my Burn Bible! I’m mostly retired now but have taught burn nursing here for 29 years, I still refer to Florence and her book every year when I teach that unit ??
Sincerely,
Margaret M. Walsh

I will forever remember Florence's kindess. As a child growing up on Brooklawn she welcomed me into the family's home and shared a warmth that made me feel safe and cared about. She will be missed by family and friends from the old neighborhood.

Florence made my first nursing job on the Strong Burn Unit easier due to her ability to mix joy with learning. Her knowledge of burn care was amazing. She was very approachable and tried to make you figure out answers to questions or solutions to problems. She made me very proud to be a nurse.

Florence was my role model as a new RN at SMH in 1974.She inspired me to be in the group to open up the new Burn Unit in 1975 and would bring the nurses in OJ while we were in the tub room. Shalom

I am saddened to read of Florence's passing. Now retired from the FIRE and EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE at Kodak Park, I will never forget the role Mrs. Jacoby played in my career over the years. Her presence as guest speaker at numerous training classes made it possible for us students to receive the very best instruction on the proper handling and treatment of burn victims in the field. Her keen knowledge mixed with her wonderful humor resulted in everyone scoring high on final tests. Rest easy dear Florence. Those of us in Fire and EMS in the Rochester/Monroe County area were honored to have been instructed by you. Thank you for sharing your life with me.

As a new graduate nurse working in the Emergency Department of Strong, Florence taught me how to care for burn patients both physically and psychologically. I speak of her often with great admiration for her contribution to our noble profession.

Florence was instrumental in the care I received, at Strong Memorial Hospital, following my major burn accident of January, 1973. I have often wondered if I would have survived without her taking a leading role in my treatment. She was, indeed, an extraordinary person. I, and countless other burn patients, received better care because of her efforts. She will never be forgotten.

Florence was a friend and an expert nurse. She guided our care of burn patients in the Emergency Dept. when I was there in the 60's and 70's. My favorite mental picture of Florence is in her bathing suit putting a burn gown on over it. She knew a yacht had exploded on Lake Ontario and came directly in to help She contributed to saving many patients during her lifetime and will continue to do so in the future through her education of professionals. Please accept my condolences.

As a student nurse at Highland Hospital I had the privilege of spending a day with Florence at Strong. She taught me so much, and 30 years later I clearly remember a statement that she made about knowing what a burn victims life was life by observing the condition of their feet. She gave so much to the nursing profession, and I am certain she gave to her family and friends in the same way. My condolences, you have lost an incredible woman, who was a pioneer in the nursing profession.

To the Jacoby Family:
I met Mrs. Jacoby back in the 50's when she was a visiting Nurse @ St. Bridget's School.
I was chosen to be her helper when she did her checkups. I was so thrilled to be able to help her & decided that I would be a Nurse someday. Although that career did not come to be, I went on to be a Medical Asst. I just loved her & followed her Career in later years. I only wish I could have talked to her about the old days @ my Grammar School. She was a wonderful person & I will never forget her.
