Irving Simon in Memorium
DEDICATED TO IRVING SIMON, A TRUE SURVIVOR
MAY 19, 2010
There lived a man named Irving
You could call him a rare kind,
Always telling a good story,
With a lesson to keep in mind!
He endured a life unlike others
Filled with adversity, strife, and pain
His determination kept him going,
while his good humor would remain.
It was a life that had many twists and turns,
Learning to survive at such a young age,
Irving learned how to cope,
He took his message on a big stage.
He was a giant in stature
Despite lacking in height,
He possessed an unrivaled wisdom,
And he lived a way he thought was right!
Having lived through the Holocaust,
Many said they just were amazed,
He learned about how to survive
His acts of triumph can only be praised!
He learned to fend for himself,
When he was only fourteen,
Having lost both his parents
And relatives that would never be seen.
When he came to the United States,
There he would find a wife,
He wanted to make something of himself,
Striving for a better life!
Determined to make a go of it,
He decided to fix and rent apartments,
Working hard and long hours,
His efforts surely made sense!
He had three kids, five grandkids
Proud as he could be,
He always wanted to help them,
His benevolence was easy to see!
He met my mother in 2006,
It was a romance like no other,
They chatted by phone for hours,
They met thanks to Warren and my brother!
He made the move to Florida,
To be with my mom,
We would listen to his stories,
He always made me feel calm!
Irving was truly authentic,
He loved everyone he met!
He lived with honesty and compassion,
What you saw is what you would get!
Irving helped me become better,
In many, many ways,
He advised me on lots of matters,
Through countless nights and days!
He will never be forgotten,
Our memory of him will stay,
For all the future generations,
There will be many words to say!
“Don’t be too happy,
Don’t be too sad,”
This was his advice
By the one I called my Step Dad!

Warren, it has been a long time since our fathers were partners but my cousin Ellen in Buffalo just emailed me about your Dad. So sorry to hear. Lost my Dad 30 years ago and think of him often as I am sure you will do the same. Fond memories of your father while growing up in Rochester. Now home is Lauderdale by the Sea in Florida and the next move will be Italy to be near my husband's family.

We send our condolences from our family to yours. We are grateful for the time we shared together as it brought us comfort and we hope in some small measure, you were comforted as well. We would have liked to have met you all under different circumstances but are glad, nonetheless, that we did and were able to hear the stories of your father - a true hero - whose spunk and determination is a lesson in perserverance for us all. May God bless you all and bring peace to your family as you continue to share his story. With deepest sympathy, the family of Martin Keymel

Irving Simon is a very very special person in my life, as I was his "apprentice" for Yom Hashoah commemoration at Rochester JCC for many years, assisting Irving with the wonderful menorah he fabricated. As a son of a holocaust survivor myself, Irving showed me the love of life, compassion for family, and the ability to overcome the most horrible adversity imaginable; which is imbedded in my heart forever. Thank you Irving, your loyal apprentice, Roman.
