I remember Helen Litten from many many years ago, when we were in high school. She was a grade ahead of me. I remember her as fun, clever, vibrant, almost magical. I had a crush on her then, and might well have invited her out had she not been older and ahead of me in school. Looking back, I wish I had.
Over the years, I've thought about her often, even recently.
The last time I saw and talked to her, she was taking a bus -- maybe to New York City. I was heading to Syracuse on the same bus, where my (late) wife Ellen was part of singing group slated to perform in a concert. Helen was traveling with a daughter and we talked until we reached Syracuse. Even then, many years after we had known each other in high school, she seemed magical. I think she told me had had some rough times, but I remember thinking that she had retained that same magic I had felt so drawn to so many years before. I wish we had connected again more recently. Seeing her obituary notice in The Democrat & Chronicle made me sad. I hope she had a good time of things until recently.
