Obituary of Mervyn A. Salzman
Mervyn was born in Rochester in 1931. He graduated from Syracuse University with honors, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was an alumnus of Yale Law School, class of 1957. Mervyn was an Attorney in Rochester for over 50 years. He served as the New York State Tax Attorney for Monroe County under Governors Rockefeller, Wilson, and Carey. He was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States and the U.S. Court of Claims in 1964. He served as Monroe County incompetency referee from 1963 through 1968.
Mervyn founded and operated several businesses during the duration of his career, including the restaurant chain Beefsteak Mining Company. He later served as the legislative chairman of the S.H.H.H. (Self Help for the Hearing Impaired), and worked with the late Senator Edward Kennedy in writing the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990.
After retiring from his law practice Mervyn enjoyed debating politics, working in his garden and drinking his Stoli vodka on the rocks with a lemon twist. He was a fighter with a big heart and a one of a kind sense of humor.
Mervyn passed away on November 28, 2015 at age 84. He is predeceased by his sister, Ethel Brightman and brother, Sidney J. Salzman. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Marilyn; children, Michael (Ami) Salzman, Bonnie (Douglas) Graves, Stephen (Dobrinka) Salzman; grandchildren, Nate, Aaron, Ian, Lucas, Sophia & Eva; brother, Ben (Betty) Salzman; many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
