Obituary of Wilhelm Braun

Passed away peacefully on September 27, 2014 at age 93, surrounded by family. Predeceased by parents, Max and Sara Braun; brother, Edi (Shmuel) Braun, and many relatives who were victims of the Holocaust. Survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Louise Braun; devoted children, Martin Zvi (Deborah) & Sarah Alisa; precious granddaughters, Sofie, Talia & Ella Rose; many cousins in Israel, Canada and the US. Born in Vienna, Bill left Nazi-occupied Austria on a Kindertransport. After a short stay in England, he was sent with other refugees to Canada. He received a PhD at the University of Toronto and was a professor of German Literature, and later, Jewish Studies, at the University of Rochester for almost 50 years. He enjoyed interacting with students and professors and lectured frequently in Rochester-area schools about his experiences. Bill enjoyed traveling to Israel and Europe, hiking in local parks, and attending the Rochester Philharmonic. He was a long-time member of the Arnett Library's Friday morning Writer's Group.
