So many years have passed since I was a student at Tempe B'rith Kodesh, but I remember Aaron Braveman as a kind and gentle man, always with a smile and a good word to say.
I saw him over the years on my returns to Rochester and he always remembered me and my siblings, although he had thousands of students over the years.

Following the recent loss of my Father-in-law Milt Weinrieb, I went to Aaron seeking his comfort; his soft and gentle words soothed my soul in a way no one but Aaron could have. Aaron was my mentor and friend and his impact on my life has and will shape who I am becoming. Thank you Aaron, you are a blessing.

"Mr. Braveman" is my religious icon. He will remain in my heart as the man who fathered me into TBK. I smile remembering his wisdom and patience. His teachings will continue to inspire others as we recite the prayers and lessons from his sermons.

My deepest condolences to Aaron's family . . . He will be greatly missed as he was loved by so many. My loving recollections of Aaron were his nearly daily visits to TBK during the years I served as Executive Director. I cherish those times when Aaron would stop to chat with me, always with some inspirational message or story . . . sometimes those stories would be about his travels with Lil, others would include an occasional joke, and still others would have a deep historic message about Judaism. Aaron was the consumate friend, mentor, and educator.

I spoke with my mom, Reva Sipser, tonight about Mr. Braveman and she shared a story that encapsulates his life-long commitment to Jewish education.
Mr. Braveman convinced my mom to join Temple B’rith Kodesh after another Rochester congregation was insistent that my two eldest sisters, Shelley and Shifra, attend both Sunday school and Hebrew classes. Both were born with severe vision disabilities and my mom thought learning Hebrew might be too challenging.
Mr. Braveman was flexible and agreed to start the girls off with Sunday school.
But he didn’t stop there. Mr. Braveman quietly contacted my sisters’ school to get a better understanding into how legally blind kids were learning back in the early 1960s. He arranged for Sunday school text books to be enlarged, bought extra large chalk for the teachers to write in large letters, and took other steps to see that visual barriers to learning were identified and eliminated.
Shelley and Shifra excelled. They wanted to go to Hebrew school and my mom enrolled them.
Today, Shifra is a Ph.D. who teaches college. Shelley teaches Hebrew to women in Brooklyn who want to convert to Judaism. Another sister, Ann, teaches in Hebrew at an elementary school in Massachusetts.
Aaron Braveman was a mensch who made a difference to many.

To Aaron's wonderful family,
My sister Ellen, and I, were lucky to be Aaron's students, then to work for him, and also to be his neighbors while growing up on Fairfield. He was outstanding in so many ways, and always looked out for us. Memories of walking, biking, and jumping rope with Aaron and Lil, encouragement and a captive audience for my musical performances, are all sweet. I still treasure a note that I've kept from 1970 that Aaron wrote in rhyme congratulating me for a show. That's how he was- a true mensch with the desire and ability to bring out the best in everyone, and to make everyone feel special. He was devoted to his beloved family, and then still had love left over to share with the community. May his memory always be for a blessing, and an inspiration.

Aaron was a friend, my mentor and a Tzadic. He taught me that life's true meaning can be found in relationships. He lived his Judaism. Aaron visited so many and brightened their day as he brightened mine as I visited him. I will truly miss him and always remember.

Aaron and I spoke every few months since my move to Florida in 1995. Every Rochester visit included time with Aaron. He was a smart, intuitive, kind person whose love of life and people was contagious. First in his life were his family members. How blessed you were to have him. Aaron and Lil gave me courage and encouragement to find joy where there is sorrow. May his family find joy in remembering him and may his memory be for a blessing for eternity.
