Obituary of Irwin Brodell CDR USNR

Irwin Brodell CDR USNR (Ret.) Passed away on October 3, 2014 at age 89. Predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Mabel & brother, Jerome. He is survived by his daughter, Evelyn Faichney of Merrimak, NH; son, Michael; grandsons, Jason (Amy) and Robert Faichney; great granddaughter, Lyla Jade Faichney; brother, Sheldon (Anne Marie) of Canandaigua, NY; several nieces & nephews. Irwin was a licensed professional engineer for over 40 years. Prior to retiring, he served Monroe County as Director of Pure Waters and the Director of Engineering. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia and a retired Commander in the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps who saw active service during World War II, and the Korean & Vietnam Wars. He was a member of the VFW Post 11118 in Pittsford. Graveside Services will be held on MONDAY at 12:30 PM at White Haven Memorial Park (210 Marsh Road). Friends are asked to meet at the main gate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project or a charity of ones choice in his memory. A History of Irwin Brodell CDR USNR (Ret.) Irwin Brodell died on Friday, October 3rd at the age of 89. He married Mabel Gordon, his wife of 64 years, soon after returning from active service with the Navy in World War II. They had known each other since early school days on Long Island. Their families had been friends for many years. Mabel died on October 25, 2010, but he is survived by his daughter, Evelyn Faichney, and his son, Michael; two grandsons, Jason and Robert Faichney; a great-granddaughter, Lyla Jade Faichney; one brother, Sheldon; and nephews, Martin, Richard, Stewart and Harold. Irwin was a devoted family person, a dedicated worker in every assignment and a staunch defender of his country. Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised on Long Island, NY, Irwin enlisted in the Navy in 1942. After completing the Navy’s College Training Program and receiving his degree of Bachelor of Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia, he was commissioned as an Ensign, Civil Engineer Corp. He served with the Seabees in the Philippines and North China in 1945 and 1946. When the Korean War broke out in 1950, Lt(jg) Brodell voluntarily returned to active duty and served in 1950 and 1951. In the Ready Reserve, he had command of various Seabee reserve units until June 1967, when as a Commander, he voluntarily returned to active duty. He was assigned to the Navy’s District Headquarters in New York City as Department Head for the Design and Construction of Navy Shore Facilities. After release to Inactive Duty in 1970, he was assigned as Commanding Officer of the Reserve Seabee Battalion in New York State. He retired in 1978, receiving commendation for his longtime and effective service. Irwin was a professional engineer, licensed in New York, Connecticut and Florida, and a Life Member and Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 1972, he was appointed Director of Pure Waters for Monroe County and was instrumental in the organizing and administration of the County’s Pure Water Program until 1975. In 1980, after a period of being a Civil Engineering consultant, he returned to the County to oversee the large sewer tunnel program, and later, as Director of Engineering, the planning for the Greater Rochester Airport. He retired in 1986 after 40 years in the Civil Engineering profession. Irwin enjoyed golfing and was a knowledgeable football fan having participated in football and boxing at the University of Virginia. At UVA, he was honored by being inducted into the prestigious Raven Society in recognition of this high scholastic achievements and service to the University while serving in the Navy Program.
