My friend Marion.
We are sad that we will no longer see her. However, we are privileged to have known her. She was a decidedly good cook, very pragmatic, very principled, and full of fun. Just thinking of the times we vacationed together with the warning. “ We are not very good with the weather. When you are with us it always rains.” So intrepidly we planned and traveled together. It rained. All the time. But in spite of this wetness, we managed to find adventure in all that we did. For instance, we bet none of you know how to choose a watermelon. Marion and I learned. Take a straw broom. Pluck out a straw. Place in the center of the watermelon horizontally, and if it moved to the vertical position (or maybe reverse that) it was ripe, sweet and perfect to eat. We never seemed to have that piece of straw to really test it.
Seafood and shellfish were our favorites. Always having a can of picked crab meat or getting the best and biggest lobsters from Tops was a challenge, one that she always conquered with finesse and when it came to crabbing she could pull in the nets like an expert. Then, the challenge was the cooking. Only Marion had a pot big enough for the number of lobsters purchased. Feast time awaited.
In business she made sure she knew every rule, law and legality in anything she touched. I remember her sitting and reading the smallest print of contracts, legal docs, insurance policies, and anything she had to sign. She would not be caught unknowing of her rights, or the rights of her client. Dot the i’s and cross the t’s. She lived by that motto.
Kindness was second nature to her. There was never a bad word about anyone, and when you needed her she was there, not only with kind words, but with full presence.
Family, the most important to her, always came first. Aaron spending summers with Grammy going to The Science Museum or the Art museum for programs. Grammy camp was the best time for her and I think Aaron loved it too. And now Micah. She just was happy seeing him coo and laugh. We all do.
Grass didn’t grow between Marion’s toes. She read many books and belonged to the bridge club, she enjoyed theater with friends and she enjoyed concerts whether on the grass or in the theater. She loved boating, fishing, and cooking what she caught. She was superwoman. Anything could be done as long as you wanted to do it.
And these last few months she showed the mettle she is made of. Approaching this problem the same as any other with the facts, the percentages and the will. Marion, you were heroic in this battle. Your determination gave you an edge very few people could have matched. You accomplished all you set out to do with love, laughter and common sense. We know how proud your family must be of the woman you were. Rest in peace. We love you.
