Coming form Novgorod, I have heard a lot of impressive things about Leonid from my family and people I knew. He was very well respected by his colleagues and students. I unfortunately have not spent as much time with him as my husband did. However, I have always heard from my husband about what a personable and a brilliant man he was. Pust' zemlya emu budet puhom.

We knew Leonid Moiseevich Likhtarnikov as a top mathematician in our native city of Novgorod. My (Igor's) younger half-brother Arkady was his student at the Novgorod State University. We know that all students loved professor Likhtarnikov not only for his deep academic expertise but also for his exceptional personality, care, support and for his sense of humor. The word Master exactly reflects who he was and who he'll remain in memories of very many people. As an author he wrote many math books for a full range of audiences: from kids to professionals. And in those books he managed to explain in his lively and clear style matters both simple and very complicated. He didn't just teach mathematics, he helped many love the grand science.
When we first met Liza, we didn't know that professor Likhtarnikov was her father. Later when he and Nonna Andreevna came to live in Rochester, we had a few opportunities to meet Leonid Moiseevich and experience his intelligence, charm and warmth of heart.
I also can tell he was a strong chess player capable of competing against chess experts.
We are proud to have known him.

We met Leonid on a visit to Novgorod and were immediately impressed by his intelligence, sensitivity and caring nature for those he came in contact with. He overcame great obstacles during the later part of his life. Our thoughts and prayers are with Liza and all her family during these difficult days.

I only knew Leonid in the last few years of his life. The obstacles he overcame in those early years, the sacrifices he made and his selfless dedication to his family, his profession and to his country, is a tribute to the strength of the human spirit.

I do remember meeting a smiling Leonid and Nonna at the home of Ken and Liza's soon after they arrived in Rochester. They both seemed happy to meet some of Ken and Liza's friends and we were greeted very warmly. Though he did not speak English (and my Russian is VERY limited) he smiled and gave me a hug. Knowing the difficult road ahead of them, without their son and his family and friends of many years, I admired both of them immediately. They knew that they would be amongst people who did not know their language plus, the differences that they would encounter. Nonna was sure that they could do it and, in a very loving way, you could see how she would help and encourage him. He seemed especially happy to be with his daughter, Liza, also; and he gained a good relationship with his grandson, Len and was very proud of him. They, as well as Ken and Leonid became chess players; that created a special bond for him with Ken. They spent many hours at chess -- even in recent years. You could really see a loving relationship between them. It is clear that he will be missed by his family and friends, who now will keep him in their memories. To live in hearts that love is not to die.

I send much sympathy to the family of Leonid, whom my son was fortunate to marry into. While there is a big hole in their hearts at this time, happy memories of many things will fill it in time. I never met this remarkable man who was my son's father-in-law but Ken always spoke fondly of him and mentioned many times that they played chess together. My son is a math teacher so I'm glad of the time he got to spend with such a master of his favorite subject.
