Obituary of Maurice Solomon

Maurice Solomon Rochester: Maurice Solomon passed away peacefully on April 17, 2010, at age 91. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Sara, and siblings Ada, Abraham and Sadie. Survived by his daughter Rebecca Solomon, son R. Adrian (Susan) Solomon, grandsons, Evan and Noah, niece Lesley Cukier, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. From Glasgow, Scotland, he entered business, then enlisted in the British Army at the outset of World War II, becoming a captain in the Royal Engineers. He served in posts in Europe and Africa, also serving as Chaplain to the Jewish troops in West Africa. Settling in Rochester in 1955 with his wife and daughter, he was a controller for local companies, and was always active in community fundraising efforts. An active and committed Mason for 60 years, he was affiliated with Flower City and ERAC Lodges in Rochester, and the Lodge of the Holy Land in Israel. He served in many leadership capacities, including Master of the Lodge, Grand Representative, and Chairman of the Custodians of the Work that oversees Masonic Ritual in New York State, becoming Custodian Emeritus in 2008. A renowned ritualist, he was a mentor to many regarding Masonic ritual and history, and authored a weekly column for many years regarding Masonic matters. He authored chapters in anthologies regarding not only Masonic history, but on other historical topics. He was the recipient, through the years, of numerous Masonic awards. He also served as Secretary of the Rochester Tartan Square Club for 25 years, a group close to his heart. A devoted husband, a loving father, grandfather and uncle, he was a man of wit and intelligence, a gifted writer and an eloquent orator. His operatic voice remained strong as he addressed groups, sang with friends, and when he recreated his Bar Mitzvah, at age 88, on the 75th anniversary. His humor and his spirit will be missed by many. Thank you to the many medical professionals who cared for Maurice, and to a great home care team for their care and compassion. Special thanks and appreciation, always, to the family, friends and Masonic brethren who gathered around to support our family in these last months so our father and grandfather could spend most of his final days at home, surrounded by his family, his books, his music, and the chance to see his team, the Glasgow Rangers.
