Obituary of Ellen Berko

Ellen Berko, loving mother and grandmother died peacefully on January 17, with her children and grandchildren at her bedside. She will be greatly missed by her 3 daughters, Jackie Beckerman, Deborah Amdur and Barbara Berko as well as her sons-in law Steve Beckerman and Joel Deitz, and her beloved grandchildren, Rachel, Lauren, Becky, Shari and Rena, and was much loved by her grandson David who preceded her in death in 2007. Her lifetime spanned two continents. Born in East Berlin where she received her doctorate in Romance languages, she came to America after the Second World War to start a new life. It was here that she met Stephen Berko to whom she was married for nearly 50 years until his death in 1991. She was a dedicated teacher, travelled the world, had a passion for the arts and was a memorable cook. She brought grace and elegance to all she did. Our thanks to the many remarkable individuals at Strong Memorial Hospital, The Friendly Home, and others who lovingly cared for her throughout this most difficult year. The family will receive friends at 31 Fairpoint Drive, Fairport from 1pm to 4pm, Saturday January 19th.
