30 years ago I came from Peru, was married to an American, we had 3 children and decided to settle in Livonia. Dr. Arluck became our doctor. The children married and each went their own way, then my husband died in 1996, but I continued to have Dr. Arluck as my doctor. I must say that the news of his passing was devastating to me. I am going to miss the chats we had in every office visit. We talked about Latin America and World News. He was so very knowledgeable, I admired him and will really miss him so very much. Please accept my most sincere condolences from
me and that of my family.
Sincerely,

Where will we find another like Doc? I feel fortunate to have been his patient for nearly 30 years. In that time he watched over my health as I went through the various stages and milestones of my life. No one will ever know my health history and life history the way he did, and it is a void which all of us who were long term patients of his will keenly feel as we seek out another physician. I cannot say a replacement, because there will be none for him. He cheered me on when my children were nearly grown and I returned to college to get an MA. We always had lovely conversations about various historical topics. He was gracious with his time, and although the waits could be long, those of us reading the outdated magazines in the waiting room always realized that it was because we were each receiving his undivided and utter attention. He was a consummate listener and a gracious individual. I will miss him greatly. My condolences go out to his family and staff.

Shep and I were high school classmates as well as close cousins as we grew up on Staten Island. I wish that geography hadn’t come between us as adults. I remember being a scared 16 year old girl, my mom had taken me to different doctors and they all could not find anything wrong. They told my mother I was faking and going through typical "teenage" problems and I just needed attention. Finally I ended up in Dr. Arluck's office. He diagnosed the problem, treated me and within 2 weeks I was feeling better. That was 32 years ago. He has remained my doctor all those years, I could always talk to him about anything. If I had one word to describe him it would be "Brilliant". He was a wonderful doctor and friend. I will never forget all our conversations over the years, lots about football, politics, health, current affairs, I had conversations with him about so many things. I will miss him greatly, I know there will never be another like him. My deepest condolences to his family. May you always know how many people he touched in his life.

Upon hearing of his loss, Fran Servis wept. The Servis Family loved him so much that when the Kanes returned to Geneseo they recommended him to us. Besides being a great Doctor, Shepard Arluck was a proud Jew that shared and argued for the Jewish people. His knowledge of Judaism was profound but so was his knowledge of all other faiths. He knew their history and loved to share with me that knowledge. He was truly a Spirtual man and I enjoyed being a part of his life. I will miss him greatly. Monday at 11:00 am I will be operated on for a hip replacement. I pray Dr. Arluck spiritually guides the hands of the physician operating on me. We loved him and pray he is with God.

Peter Tennenbaum posted a condolence
Sunday, December 13, 2009
I have little doubt that Dr. Sheppard Arluck was one of the most extraordinary physicians in the entire United States.
Trained from the "old school" where patient-oriented service ruled supreme, he devoted himself to his practice and to every person who came to see him.
He practiced in the country, but his knowledge of medicine was profound. Few people would know this but, based on his deep knowledge of medicine, his incredible personal skills and insight, the dedication he brought to his craft, and the respect that he earned from virtually everyone he touched, Dr. Arluck, by virtue of his talent and his ability, should have taught at Harvard Medical School. No, I have that wrong: He should have been the Head of Harvard Medical School.
But he enjoyed dealing with patients far too much. He was known as a talker and he had stories that could go on and on and on. The longer the story was, however, the more interesting the ending point, the moral, the purpose. He did not chatter -- he spoke with purpose.
But when he was truly needed by someone, the waiting room could be filled to the brim, and yet he would devote an hour or two to your problem without the slightest indication that he was rushed or worried about meeting a deadline, or concerned about the backlog of patients.
If people complained, he simply pointed out that if/when it was YOUR turn to need the extra attention, you would appreciate it beyond measure. And if you did not appreciate that, then you could find someone else. The "price" for being a patient of his was learning patience and then learning what it was to be treated as seriously as anyone has every treated you, ever.
Dr. Arluck earned his money, but what he really earned was loyalty.
Dr. Arluck personally designed the layout of his office and it is a model for how a small medical facility should be built. The "modern" style is to put as many barriers up as possible -- as many doors as they can fit between you and the "DOCTOR". At each stage, there is another door that is closed, another compartment to lead you into, to remove you from humanity, to isolate you till you felt small and the doctor would be in total control.
Sheppard had a different view, based on a deep understanding of people's psychological makeup and their need NOT to be isolated from others.
His office had an open layout, with a waiting room that was openly connected to where you checked in and were weighed. When you appeared downstairs for your appointment, you were handed YOUR OWN chart, and given every opportunity to look through it. When you checked in upstairs, it was as if you had entered another world, where a type of respect was shown for you that other places could never approach, let alone come close to.
One reason was his choice of workers -- from the receptionist, to the LPNs to the RNs to the Physician's Assistants to the Office Managers -- everyone was first rate, as a human being first (I would name them all but some old-timers would be left out). Every single person was as extraordinary human being who treated others according to the Golden Rule.
Suffice it to say that Dr. Sheppard Arluck was a country doctor Super-Genius, a person who always knew why we were here on Earth (to help others), and a man whose good works will never be forgotten, EVER.
If one-tenth of the present physicians had one-tenth of Dr. Arluck's personal and professional abilities, this country would be ten times better off.

I had the honor of working for Dr. Arluck for past 3 mos. He loved to talk to his patients for hours. He knew everything about them and had known several for 40 plus years. He was so great about answering whatever questions I might have to best treat the patient. Before starting my brief employment, I was heading to Atlanta to visit family. He spoke highly of his daughters and was very proud of all that they had accomplished and of his grandchildren. He also talked of recent calls from his nephew -- no doubt discussions on the Giants or Yankees!!
