So sorry. I remember on one of my family’s annual visits from New Jersey to my grandparents, the Kistlers, who lived next door to the Decharios on Summit, I’d be sitting outside in their porch swing on many a summer evening listening to Joe play Rhapsody in Blue on his piano. It was magical. I’ve thought of those moments often.
Thanks for the beautiful memory Joseph.

Joe, how happy you made us when you came home to Girard, KS, for our 53rd class reunion. We were honored with your music then and will always cherish the dvd that Carole Hance made for us. With tht, we shall always be able to enjoy your music. We always knew that you were our "rose among the thorns". A classmate of GHS.

All the pleasant memories come back when I think of Joe, our old friend Joe. There were long sumer afternoons of just playing catch with a baseball, our Boy Scout canoe trip to Canada, our road trip to Colorado in '53. It was a privilege to know you. Thanks for the memories.

Our sympathy to Joe's family and friends. We were classmates in the great class of 1953 at GHS. We knew you were outstanding then, but what a blessing it was to hear you play at the reunion two years ago.

It was great to get to see Joe Lee again at the 53rd reunion of our Girard High School Class. Our fathers were great friends and fishing buddies. Tony was a cheerful man and it was good to see Joe also was cheerful at the reunion. We made a video of him playing piano at our
class reunion and his telling us how he enjoyed a certain piece which was written to be played with a harp since his wife played a harp. Since leaving high school I had lost contact except through our parents. It was a privilege to have known such a talent and such a talented family.

Greetings to Barbara and Tony Dechario and to Alice Ann. Joe Lee and I were good friends in Girard, Kansas. Our fathers went fishing together at Farlington Lake. Then our families visited in your big house on North Summit Street. We even played in the back yard barn a couple of times.
I still consider Joe Lee to be my friend and look forward to meeting him again in Heaven some day.
Cheers, George Karr

I know the proper form of address is "Professor Dechario," but for me you always were, and will remain, just Joe. We grew up together in Girard, Kansas, and many a night sat for hours on the curb under the streetlight on the corner of Summit and Catalpa near your home struggling to puzzle out the meaning of life. Now you know, Joe. You always were quicker than the rest of us. Love, Bret

Dr. Decharia, classmate at Girard High School was a gifted student and a role model for the entire school, both in academics and in music. It was a real treat to see him perform at the piano at the Class of 53 reunion of GHS at their 53d reunion in 2006. It will always be a pleasant memory.

Mrs. Dechario,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. Dr. Dechario was a special mentor to many of us at SOPA. He was certainly one of the best storytellers on campus and time spent with the two of you and the Walkers was always a delight. His students will always remember his wit, kindness, wisdom and his passion for music.

Joe Dechario was a close member of my family and hearing the news of his passing is devastating. There are no words for the great sadness that will linger in Geneseo, and for all of us who knew Joe, because he has left us here to miss him and all that he was. There is no sadder sound than the silence that remains now that his music has stopped. Joe will live on forever in his children, grandchildren and in our memories of him, all of us remembering the glorious sound of his piano.
Good bye Joe, you were greatly loved and will be missed. We are changed for knowing him, we are changed for losing him.
Rest in peace, Joe.
