Former jewelry store owner and Main Street real estate developer Edwin H. Cohen died Saturday evening in his Pittsford home. He was 82.
Mr. Cohen is survived by his wife of 59 years, Phyllis, and a daughter, Lisa Cohen-Welles.
A lifelong Rochester-area resident, Mr. Cohen owned Harmin's Jewelry Store and invested in real estate downtown and in Florida.
The jewelry store, originally owned by Mr. Cohen's father, Harry, was located at three different downtown locations over the years, Phyllis Cohen said.
He owned the Gamrod-Harmon building, which he demolished, and the Ellwanger and Barry Building, both on State Street, among other properties. His tenants included McDonald's, Fashion Bug and Thom McAn.
At the time of his death, Mr. Cohen owned four buildings inside the footprint of Renaissance Square at East Main Street and North Clinton Avenue in addition to his Pittsford home.
He was born Aug. 14, 1926, in Rochester, the only child of Harry and Minnie Cohen.
He graduated from Monroe High School and entered the Air Force, serving during World War II. He started working at the jewelry store when he left the Air Force and retired when he was 50.
"He gave his whole heart and soul to that store," said Phyllis Cohen.
Mr. Cohen married Phyllis Meyers in 1950, and the couple moved to Brighton. They moved to Pittsford in 1989.
After his retirement, Mr. Cohen played golf and kept his interest in real estate investing.
His health declined in the last five years as he lived with Parkinson's disease, Phyllis Cohen said.
