Shocked and very sad to hear of Steve's passing. You learned volumes about mentoring and encouraging just by watching him interact with his students and his peers. His selflessness was exemplary and he will be missed by our entire community.

Leslie, I wish that I could have been at Steve's funeral today along with your family and many friends. However, the demands of leading two startup companies and the commencement of the Engineering for Kids summer day camp season yesterday made it impossible for me to travel this week. (I can envision Steve forbidding me from bailing out on the EFK youngsters.) I will get back to Rochester this summer, and hope to visit with you then. Meanwhile, may you find strength and peace-of-mind to carry you through this difficult time.

Steve touched the world like no one else, distributing optics education material so that thousands of children could enjoy the wonders of light. May his gentle soul rest in peace and may his family find strength in many fond remembrances.

Dear Leslie, Aaron, and Jason and family,
While Stephen's body will be put to rest tomorrow, Stephen's spirit will live forever through the many students and colleagues he impacted in immense ways through his teaching and mentoring, through his research at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics and associated publications, and leading the OSA Optical Fabrication and Testing symposium for many years as well as contributing his wisdom and energy to the RE Hopkins Center and also recently the Center for Freeform Optics at the University of Rochester....and many more over the years we will hear through this homage to Stephen. We will carry Stephen's spirit as we move forward in our professional and daily lives. Stephen has deeply marked our lives and nothing can ever take that away - That his body rests in peace and his spirit flies and shines forever with all of us.
