Debbie & Mike,
I just learned about your mother and wanted to send along my condolences. I have such vivid memories of her from childhood and beyond. Shirley was a unique and wonderful woman filled with great spirit and warmth. She was a tremendous source of comfort to the "Stewart girls" at our own mother's funeral. In spite of her poor health, she made the effort to be there for us. I will always remember her with great fondness.

A message of rememberance and condolence to the Apter family. We became acquainted with husband Jack after they were married, but remember Shirley well in her younger years visiting her grandparents and cousins the Zurettes and the Levines in Syracuse. We didn't know they had become residents of Rochester.
Our best wishes to her family and friends,
Lillian and David Leffert

I have very happy memories of the time we all spent together. I will always remember your mom welcoming me into your home, and sending us out to play in the backyard with a warm smile on her face.

I heard from a classmate that Mrs. Apter had passed away. Please know that the smile on her face, her charisma, and her desire to see each one of us succeed had a lot to do with me going into teaching. She was one of my favorites, and I think of her often. She sent me a lovely note when I got married which I still have. What an impact she made on so many of our lives!

Dear Debbie and Mike,
Shirley's passing will leave an emptiness in so many hearts. As a colleague, she taught me many lessons throughout my teaching career. As a friend, she taught me a lesson that she did better than anyone I ever knew: we must work hard at making friends family. Shirley became a key member of my extended family. I often referred to her as "my other mother". Doug and I will never forget the wonderful moments spent with both Shirley and Jack. They were extraordinary people, with a capacity to care and to share. She, and you and your families, are in our hearts and prayers. With much love and sympathy...

I met Shirley and Debbie at St. John's Home when I visited my own Mom. I always enjoyed our foursome visits especially at the fireplace. Shirley had a beautiful smile and I always had a sense that she was a lot of fun when she had been well. My thoughts and prayers go out to Debbie and her family.

Señora Apter was my Spanish teacher at Hazard St. Middle school from 1974 - 1976. Her love of the language and enthusiasm in the classroom inspired me to go on and become a Spanish teacher myself! I will forever remember her witty response of "Nunca, Nunca, Nunca!" I am so sorry for your loss. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy.

Dear Mike and Debbie, About 40 years ago I had a teacher who taught me to love the French language. After that she helped me out with some difficult times in my life. She was one of the most vibrant, down to earth people I have ever met. I still love French and her kindness remains forever in my heart. I am so saddened by this loss.

Shirley Apter had enough zest and restless energy to animate a three-ring circus, cook the hot dogs, and stand out front and drag people inside. Once, sitting in the car, waiting for Debbie to choose the right shoes, Shirley told me that she was her own creation, self-willed. I wondered about her sanity. I don't know whose creation she was, but she was wonderful.

Dear Mike and Debbie, Although you may not remember me, I went to Charles Andrews with Mike, and have fond memories of both your parents growing up having spent time with you on Beatte Street when my grandparents lived a couple of houses away from you. I later reconnected with your Mom during my years as a teacher. She was a wonderful woman and I know she will be missed by her family.

Debbie and Mike- Jack and Shirley were among the first people we met when we moved to Syracuse many years ago. They took us under their wing and made us feel so welcome to the city. Your Mom was vibrant, peppy, interested in people and ideas and always warm and caring. Many memories flood my mind - summer family fun at Wellesley Island, Jack and Shirley and Mike reunion at our summer house, becoming good neighbors (next door) after being friends for years,Cape Cod vacations . I hope your good memories help you through these difficult days. Much Love A&M

Madame Apter was my French teacher at Hazard Street Middle School in 1983. Although I hated French, I loved her class and grew an appreciation for language teachers everywhere. I am not quite sure how she taught us so well and dealt with our middle school personalities, but she did. She always had a smile on her face and seemed like she loved teaching. I guess sometimes it isn't what we learn "subject-wise" from teachers but how they made you feel and I smile fondly when I think of her. My sympathy goes out to her family and friends.
