Zvi turned my musical life around when I, as a 16 year old, became his student at the Music Academy of the West. I immediately sensed that I wished to study with him, if possible, after I completed high school. Fortunately (and thanks to some vigorous string-pulling from his side) I was able to study for four years with him at the Eastman School on full scholarship.
Zvi gave me high standards, taught me to finish a note (a much bigger subject than it may appear) and to articulate musical form, all the while making me aware of the importance of style and intention. He could not abide mindless fiddling, and would let you know it beyond doubt. And, as for his bizarre sense of humor, that's another lesson in itself. It was always perplexing to see him laugh for a straight minute or so at some astonishingly bad joke he had just cracked. He was a living embodiment of the adage "take your work seriously but not solemnly".
I last communicated with him a few days after his final recital.
Strange as it may sound, at an age like that, I was not expecting him to check out yet, and was very sad to learn of his death. Still, as it has been noted elsewhere, he left quickly and without a fuss, having completed all his commitments. Another lesson in life from the master.
My love goes to his family, especially his wife, Marianne, who was so kind to me (and to all of us students) way back then.
Thank you for everything, and good night, dear Teacher.

Condolences
The Keshet Eilon Music Center, faculty, management and students mourn the death of the noted violinist, teacher and unforgettable personality, Zvi Zeitlin.
Zvi joined the faculty of the Keshet Eilon International Summer Mastercourse in 2001, giving us a wonderful opportunity to appreciate his tremendous control of the violin and to learn from his vast experience in performance and teaching, but most especially to benefit from his deeply inspirational musicality and from his human approach to students and colleagues alike.
He leaves a vacuum in the violin world and in the field of music generally.
We extend heartfelt condolences to his wife, his family and his students.

Mr. Zeitlin, you were the driving force in my life for me to pursue music as a profession. These past 4 years of working with you at the twilight of your career were some of the best times of my life. You were one of the greatest musicians, but, more importantly, one of the greatest people I ever had the pleasure of knowing. While it is so painful for me to say goodbye to you, I know that you lived a wonderful life, performing, teaching, and giving life and love to others until the very end, and I know that you will always continue to make music in the world to come.
I love you and miss you dearly.
