Stanley was a wonderful man and I adored the time we spent together. Unfortunately, the accident I had prevented me from driving for the last year and a half so I couldn't make the trip to Rochester to see him as I really wanted to and I was just getting to the point that I was about to come......I loved the whole family and knew how much you all meant to him. He was so proud of you and enriched by how you treated him. It was wonderful to attend the receptions at the Graduate School and see how he was honored by so many of his past students. Stanley was a highlight of my life. Our time together was too short. I would love to read his memoirs. Warm hugs to you all. Lynne & Buddie too

Marty,
Condolences. My wife Penny and I wish you every comfort.
Stanley was my and my family's dentist for many years until he retired. He was a truly great scientist but, above all, a real mensch.
May you and Sheri and the rest of your family enjoy a long life.
My very best remembrances.

I felt compelled to write a brief condolence message, as I worked for Dr. Handelman while I was in my last year of high school. It was a job that provided me with experience as a dental assistant. This actually came in handy many many years later when I worked for an endodontist.
Dr. Handelman had a fantastic sense of humor and was just a terrific guy. He had one joke he loved to tell about a Jewish woman going to the butcher to buy a chicken, and after giving the chicken a thorough lookover, the butcher finally asked if SHE could pass such a rigorous inspection. It always made me laugh. He also introduced me to a tongue sandwich, by not telling me ahead of time what it was. I had to admit it was delicious, even though I found myself unable to ever try it again.
He was a wonderful boss and a very sweet man. I extend my sympathies to his loved ones and rather large family at this time. He will certainly be greatly missed.

My condolences to the family of Dr. Handelman. Although he was never my direct mentor I got to know him through the years at Eastman Dental and appreciated his knowledge in the dental field and his kind and friendly demeanor. May he rest in peace.

Stan was and stays a personality who knew how to induce interest and dedication in both dentistry and humanity. The happy and fruitful time I spent in Rochester as a young postgraduate student was the initial trigger factor in both my clinical and academic career for which Stan's warm kindness, empathy, teaching, advice and encouragement remained an important contribution.
With respect and affection,
Michel

I was saddened to hear of Dr. Handelman’s passing. I was looking forward to seeing him at the 100th year celebration of the Eastman Dental Center (EDC). My visit with him will now only be in memory….
As I reflect back, it has been more than thirty years when I applied to the Eastman Dental Center GPR Program. I was humbled to receive an invitation to interview with Dr. Stanley Handelman in Rochester. He and his wife Estelle, graciously invited me to stay with them at their home during the interview process. I will always cherish the thoughtfulness and kind hospitality that was given me. One night we had dinner at a posh French restaurant where I enjoyed my first Lillet. It was Estelle’s favorite aperitif. Stan thought that Estelle and I would not be able to eat our dinner, but we surprised him.
Stan Handelman was a great leader and mentor. Many of the students who studied under him have reached extraordinary achievements in the field of dentistry and healthcare as researchers, administrators, and clinicians. We all gained a wealth of knowledge from him and are proud of our Eastman (EDC) heritage. When I told him that I had accepted the offer from UCLA to enter their Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program and was moving to California, he asked me to look up Dr. Jay Gershen and Dr. Glenn Clarke. Both are EDC alums and were teaching and doing research at UCLA. I am proud to say that Dr. Jay Gershen is currently the sixth President of the Northeast Ohio Medical University in Ohio. Dr. Glenn Clarke became a renown lecturer on Orofacial Pain and Joint disorders and is Professor and Director of the Advanced Orofacial Pain and Oral Medicine program at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry.
As students we entered the EDC-GPR to study and learn to become one of the best dentists in the world. After we graduated we worked hard to achieve our successes. I became a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and currently hold faculty appointments at UCLA and the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. I am the current President of the Western States of Pediatric Dentistry and a past–president of the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry. A scholarship fund has been created under my name at the UCLA School of Dentistry for students achieving academic excellence and pursuing leadership. I married one of my EDC-GPR co-residents who became a Prosthodontist under Dr. Jerry Grazer. He became the President of the Tri-county Dental Society, a component of the California Dental Association. He currently serves as a Council member to the American Prosthodontic Society. We are Stan’s progeny. The years spent at EDC-Rochester, NY were some of the best years of our lives.
Thank you Stan. You shed the light and had faith in us that we could do great things! We continue to climb trees to reach greater heights. You will surely be missed.

I am saddened to hear of Dr. Stanley Handelman's passing; I pray for divine consolation for his family and loved ones. I have very fond memories of Dr. Handelman's mentorship in clinical dental education during time spent in Rochester for my general dentistry residency, and eventually, the Master of Public Health & orthodontic residency programs. Like so many other alumni whose careers have been positively impacted by our encounter with Dr. Handelman, I am foreever grateful for the training opportunity at Eastman.

My condolences to the Handelman family and extended families. Your father was such an inspiring man and had the ability to make everyone around him a better person. He challenged our beliefs and always wanted us to do the best we could and do it for the correct reasons. Dr Handelman had a huge impact on my life as a dentist while I was in the residency program at Eastman in 86-87. I knew I wanted to practice in a more rural area and thought I wanted to focus on certain areas of dentistry and after many discussions he led me down a different path in order to be of service to more patients than I otherwise would have been able to help.
Donna and I still remember the little leather moccasins he sent us for the birth of our first child. They were passed to all three of the kids. He still remembered us and his students at one of the reunions in Florida 15 - 20 years after we graduated. I am in awe when I think of all the students he influenced and how he could still recognize them years later and remember working with them.
May all of your great memories with him help comfort you. God Speed Dr Handelman!

Sincere sympathy on the passing of one of the greats. We were at EDC in early 70,s and Stan was a wonderful teacher and friend and had a great influence on my career. He helped me through my masters degree and always offered practical advice.
We were lucky enough to have met him and enjoyed a great night out at dinner with him last Summer and also a wonderful night at Cyril and Shulas. His body was weak but his spirit was strong and he still had the twinkle in his eye.
Bruce, you will probably remember staying with us in Dungarvan by the sea, where you bravely swam out to sea to help a kid who was drifting out to sea on an inflatable boat.
It got a mention in the local press at that time.
Many years have passed since then and both Kathleen and I are well.
We have a daughter in Georgetown doing a post doc assignment and we will visit her next year and hope to combine it with a trip to Rochester.
Again sincere sympathy on Stan's passing.Celebrate his life.
God bless to all.

You were father, grandfather and Zaidie to so many more than you could count. We were so privileged to have known Stan these many years--from the time he and Estelle insisted that Joyce and I meet till the last time we saw Stan just a couple of weeks ago. Watching his physical deterioration was painful but seeing his continuing interests and memoir work was uplifting. We will remember always what you mean to us.

Dr.Handleman was kind to me when i needed help the most when i started my own Lab . he asked me how much i needed a month to pay my bills and then wrote me out a check for that amount telling me that each month i would receive it and not to deduct it from bills for work i did ! Fortunately i never had to cash that check cause he kept me busy doing his lab work !
Five years later he brought me into the dental center as the lab technician to the residents those twenty years turned out to be the happiest times of my work life He was never a "Boss" but a friend not only to me but to all the residents and made EDC a place to learn and enjoy !
He was a good man ! Thanks for the memories Stan ( he always asked me to call him Stan when we were alone , treated me like an equal !)

PS . due to my wife's illness i doubt that i will make the service .

I was saddened to hear of Dr. H passing. I was a resident at EDC in 1976-78 and moved back home (Pittsburgh) immediately after. My daughter attended W&J college based on a conversation that Dr. H and I had when she was graduating high school.
Bottom line there are very few people in my entire life that I can say that had an immense influenece, and impact that made me "who I am today" -----Dr. H was one of them. I will never ever forget all he did for me and I am forever grateful to have spent 2 years in Rochester, the best 2 years of my life.
My deepest sympathy to the Handleman family

Stan was so talented in so many ways. In his professional career, he excelled as a leader, mentor, researcher, collaborator, and an excellent clinician. He excelled in his hobbies as well. He could easily have been a professional photographer or cabinetmaker, and he approached these hobbies as an artist. He enjoyed getting together with his friends and students to play bridge and tennis. As chairman of the General Dentistry program at Eastman Dental, he cultivated relationships with and trained students from the US and around the world. Stan visited many of his former students over the years, He loved to travel. I recall being at a departmental meeting at Stan's house many years ago. One of Stan's sons suddenly interrupted the meeting. Stan immediately stopped and gave his son his full attention. I was a young father then, but it was an important lesson to me; and a testimony about the kind of man and father he was. He will be sorely missed, but his impact and memory will continue on in so many of us - his students.
